Lyndhurst Way
Set within the Hollygrove Conservation Area in Peckham, this Edwardian townhouse was reconfigured to unlock the potential of its rear elevation. The existing extension was poorly planned, offering a constrained kitchen and limited additional living space, with little relationship to the garden beyond.
The new intervention introduces a contemporary yet materially grounded extension that establishes a clear dialogue between old and new. A cream brick plinth anchors the addition, supporting a lightweight envelope of bleached Douglas fir cladding. Douglas fir–clad sliding doors and finely detailed casement windows mediate between interior and exterior, creating a generous threshold to the garden.
Internally, a restrained material palette continues the architectural language of the exterior. Exposed bleached Douglas fir structure, polished concrete floors and light natural stone surfaces produce a calm, tactile interior that emphasises craftsmanship and material honesty. Discreet concealed lighting provides ambient illumination, while large rooflights inserted along the side pitch flood the dining area with daylight and draw light deep into the existing rear library.
Granted planning permission in 2020 and completed in 2022, the project was longlisted for the Don’t Move, Improve! Awards in 2024. The result is a carefully calibrated extension that transforms the spatial quality of the house while remaining sensitive to its conservation context.
